Oamaru and the Waitaki District have been one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing travel destinations for several years now, and it’s easy to see why. As one of the country’s most historic and beautiful towns, with a unique look and feel that earned it the accolade “New Zealand’s coolest town” from Lonely Planet, Oamaru has something for just about everyone, whether you’re interested in architecture, wildlife, scenery, art and culture, gastronomy and more! And as the premiere accommodation in Oamaru, Pen-y-bryn is the place to stay if you want a truly memorable and enjoyable visit to this stunning town.
When you arrive at Pen-y-bryn, we will welcome you at your car and offer to help you bring your belongings into your guest room. Once you are settled in, we will offer you a beverage and a tour of the lodge. If you are dining with us, we will confirm your preferred dining time and schedule your pre-dinner canapé service. If you are not dining with us, we will offer help with dinner reservations and offer you an evening drink before you depart for your evening activities.
If you are both dining with us and also attending the evening viewing of the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony we will offer the option of interrupting your dinner to allow time for the penguin viewing, which takes place at dusk.
Before you retire for the evening, we will ask you when you prefer to have your breakfast in the morning. Breakfast is normally served starting at 8am, but if your travel or tour requirements dictate an earlier breakfast time, we are happy to adjust this to suit your needs.
During your stay with us, you will have full use of all facilities in the lodge, free and unlimited ultra-fast broadband internet access and complimentary soft drinks, tea and coffee. As a guest of Pen-y-bryn you may also use our small fitness room (equipped with rowing machine, stationary bicycle and a selection of weights) or visit the local 24-hour Snap Fitness centre at no cost. We also offer laundry services and assistance with booking tours, activities and massage treatments, along with a host of other services. Whatever you may require, we are only too happy to offer assistance to make sure your time with us is as effortless and enjoyable as possible.

What people are saying about Pen-y-bryn
"Booked into the Park Room - large and spacious with good seating to relax. Large bathroom with a good range of toiletries. Small area with fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Good access to a washer and drier - if we did our own there was no charge otherwise they would charge $25. Lovely lounge and dining areas - James and James provide canapes with a drink each evening and it was a good opportunity to meet other guests. Breakfast provided a good range of options - cold and hot and was a lovely time to relax before going out for the day. Hosts provided good advice on what to see in the area and also booked us to see the blue penguins along with a taxi. Evening meals can be booked in advance - we did this as the restaurants in Oamaru were very limited - pizzas, burgers etc, James provides a four course meal but for us there was too much food as we have quite small appetites. The food was well prepared and presented and introduced us to flavours we may not have tried before - good use was made of the garden produce."
"We greatly enjoyed our one night stay at Pen-y-bryn Lodge after our original plans fell through. Thanks very much to James for allowing us to stay and for his hospitality. The breakfast here is amazing and among the best we’ve ever enjoyed (including homemade pastries, granola, muffins, and jam). We also enjoyed the many throughful touches in the room such as freshly baked cookies and toiletries that were made in New Zealand. Our hosts were kind enough to provide us with a map of the local area and suggest places and sights to see. They also advised points of interest on our journey to Mount Cook."
"A beautifully restored house, relaxing, welcoming and classy. Don't forget to book dinner, the food is worthy of Michelin status and should not be missed! Possibly the best breakfast we had in NZ, homemade preserves, honeycomb and honey from the hive in the garden. Nothing is too much trouble for the excellent hosts. Thank you J&J :)"
